Ready to run yet? RYAN: Oh, not a chance. EMMA: Technically, yeah, but not everyone knows who they are. you don't like your family? EMMA: No family to like.

She's nothing more than an evil witch! PRINCE CHARMING: No no no, don't stoop to her level, there's no need. Once Upon a Time: Season 5 premieres September 27th at 8 p.m. The key is not letting those new additions overwhelm the rest of the show as has happened in some prior seasons, and instead let them enhance this interesting, fresh direction OUAT is heading in. There isn't much Camelot in the first episode, though there is enough of Amy Manson to prove that she was completely perfect casting for Brave's Merida. The whole Dark Swan concept feels like it has reinvigorated Once Upon a Time, and I'm excited to see where it leads. It's the sort of arc that OUAT needs to really nail to justify such a big turn. Making Emma dark was a bold move, as it changes an integral part of the series: the Savior is now on track to become a major villain.
ONE UPON A TIME PILOT IGN REVIEW SERIES
There's a real sense here that showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis assessed what worked and what didn't in recent seasons to figure out how they could make the series stronger. It's that sort of self-awareness of Once Upon a Time's strengths and weaknesses that make the Season 5 premiere feel like it's gotten off on the right track.
In a similar moment, another character whose been largely absent in recent seasons comments that he's felt sidelined, allowing the writers to do doubly address a potential criticism of the show and reinsert a familiar face into the story. In one scene, a character remarks to Belle that she's better served helping everyone rescue Emma than she is sitting by Rumple's bedside as he's unconscious - and she is (though there's a Disney-fied solution that helps her get the best of both worlds). Neither Regina and Robin Hood's nor Belle and Rumpelstiltskin's romantic troubles come to the forefront in this episode, but in a way that OUAT tips its hat to the audience. Expect that connection to continue into Season 5 as Emma struggles with her Dark One powers Hook isn't going to abandon her, and he's going to be resolute as he tries to save her (even if he does make some reckless decisions). Emma finally confessed her love for Hook in the Season 4 finale, and that was her acknowledgement of their more mature bond. It's also refreshing to see OUAT leaving some of its romantic drama behind for more adult explorations of relationships. It's a very clever reveal in taking a long-established element of the show and twisting it to serve a bigger purpose, and it's something I'm really interested to see play out. One big mythology twist that happens early in the Season 5 premiere clues the audience into how those disparate parts will come together. Emma as the Dark One is the core of this half-season, and the Camelot, Merida and Merlin additions slip nicely into that storyline.
